It can be challenging at times to determine whether you are experiencing a dental emergency. If in doubt, consider the following questions:

  • Do you have a severe, persistent toothache?
  • Do you have swelling in the mouth or jaw?
  • Do you have a pimple-like bump on the gums?
  • Do you have a knocked-out, dislodged, loose, or broken tooth?
  • Is there bleeding from the lips, gums, or tongue?
  • Do you have a broken or lost crown or filling?

In general, a dental emergency is a situation requiring urgent care to relieve pain, save a tooth, treat an infection, or stop bleeding.

The holiday season is upon us, and what better way to prepare for time with family and friends than by restoring your smile’s sparkle? At First Class Family Dentistry, we offer safe and effective teeth whitening that will leave you ready to dazzle while enjoying the long-awaited holiday festivities.

Why Do Teeth Get Stained and Discolored?

As the years go by, many factors can lead to dull and discolored teeth, including the natural aging process, smoking, and consuming dark foods and beverages like coffee, tea, and berries. Trauma, certain illnesses, and some medications can also result in tooth discoloration. The good news is that professional teeth whitening can lift most stains, leaving your teeth bright and shiny in time for the holidays.

What Are Your Teeth Whitening Options?

At First Class Family Dentistry, we offer in-office and at-home Lumibrite whitening treatments to transform your smile. Lumibrite in-office or chairside whitening is a new teeth whitening option that delivers dramatic results in as little as 30 minutes. The innovative system comes in different concentrations, offering a fully customizable experience. A desensitizer and a patented whitening gel provide a fast, effective, and gentle whitening experience with zero sensitivity, while fluoride helps promote a healthier smile. Lumibrite Professional Whitening can brighten your smile up to 7 shades in just 30 minutes!

If you’d rather whiten your teeth in the comfort of your home, we are happy to provide you with custom whitening trays and the Lumibrite professional-grade whitening gel. You can also use your kit for touch-up treatments to keep your smile at its best.

Are You a Candidate for Lumibrite Teeth Whitening?

Lumibrite teeth whitening is ideal for most teeth stains, especially yellowish teeth resulting from smoking or consuming dark-colored foods and drinks. When it comes to discoloration resulting from trauma or the use of medications, professional whitening may not yield the desired results. If teeth whitening is not right for you, Dr. Barbu may recommend a different cosmetic dentistry solution, such as dental veneers or crowns, to transform your smile.

Maintaining Your White, Dazzling Smile Over the Holidays

After achieving your bright holiday smile, the following are tips to keep it healthy and prevent it from becoming dull and discolored once again:

  • Remember to brush and floss daily, even during the busy holiday season.
  • Limit your consumption of dark foods and beverages.
  • Steer clear of smoking or using tobacco products to maintain your bright smile and your overall health.
  • Drink lots of water throughout the day to flush away plaque, bacteria, and sugars from all those delicious holiday treats.
  • Eat plenty of crunchy fruits and veggies, which naturally remove plaque and food particles, keeping your smile clean and fresh.
  • Visit First Class Family Dentistry for your regular dental cleanings to remove new surface stains and prevent them from setting in.

Tooth decay is the most common reason for visiting the dentist at any stage of life. At First Class Family Dentistry, we offer tooth-colored fillings to restore seamless, natural-looking smiles. Here’s all you need to know about our aesthetic restorations and their many benefits for your smile.

What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Tooth-colored fillings are restorations made from a composite resin material that we closely match to the shade of your natural teeth. Your new filling will bond directly to your tooth structure, restoring the health and function of the affected tooth.

Tooth-colored fillings are versatile, offering a quick and conservative solution to close small gaps between teeth and repair chipped, worn, or cracked teeth, restoring their health and function.

What Are the 5 Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings?

The following are the top five benefits of tooth-colored fillings:

#1 They Look Natural: Your tooth-colored fillings are custom-made to match your teeth, delivering beautifully natural results. Once in place, no one will know you’ve had any dental work done.

#2 They Are Conservative: Tooth-colored fillings require minimal preparation, preserving much more of your natural tooth structure than traditional fillings. Keeping more of the tooth structure intact helps enhance the strength and integrity of the treated tooth, maintaining your long-term dental health.

#3 They Bond to the Tooth Structure: Unlike traditional fillings that are wedged in place, your tooth-colored filling will bond to your tooth structure. That helps strengthen and fortify the restored tooth, ensuring its longevity and making it less likely to break or fracture.

#4 They Don’t Expand and Contract: Silver fillings contract and expand in response to heat and cold, which can often leave the tooth structure weaker and prone to cracking. Tooth-colored fillings, on the other hand, do not respond to temperature changes, making them less likely to cause tooth cracks or fractures.

#5 They Are Durable: Tooth-colored fillings are strong and durable, lasting up to 10 years or even longer with proper care. We recommend maintaining proper oral hygiene, including daily brushing and flossing. Avoid biting down on hard foods or objects or biting your nails so you don’t accidentally damage your tooth-colored filling. It’s also important to visit First Class Family Dentistry for your twice-yearly dental exams and cleanings to ensure your restorations and natural teeth stay in tip-top shape.

Tooth-Colored Fillings Near Me in Sandusky, MI

If you have a damaged or painful tooth, contact First Class Family Dentistry to schedule a consultation. Dr. Barbu may recommend a tooth-colored dental filling to get your smile’s health, natural appearance, and function back on track. You can count on us for exceptional care and service. We invite you to call 810-688-6677 to schedule your appointment or book one online today.

With the Halloween festivities in the air, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of creepy costumes, spooktacular decorations, and, of course, plenty of candies and sweet treats. The good news is that Halloween doesn’t have to be frightful for your smile. Here are some tips our team at First Class Family Dentistry put together to help you enjoy the holiday spirit without compromising your smile.

Keep Up with Brushing and Flossing

Maintaining good oral hygiene care is more important than ever during the holidays, especially when indulging in sweet candies and treats. Make sure you brush your teeth at least twice daily for two minutes and floss daily. Encourage every member of your family to maintain good oral hygiene this Halloween and all year long.

Choose Candy Wisely: While it’s difficult to resist Halloween candies, some are better for your teeth than others. For example, it’s best to avoid sticky, chewy, or gummy candies, which cling to the grooves and crevices of the teeth, providing an abundant food source for harmful oral bacteria. We also recommend steering clear of hard candies, which can chip or fracture your teeth. A healthier candy choice would be dark chocolate, which contains less sugar and doesn’t stick to the teeth. It also has antioxidants, providing benefits to your overall health.

Timing Your Treats: Munching on candies and sweet Halloween treats all day long prolongs the contact of your teeth with sugar, so cavities tend to form faster. We recommend keeping candies for during or after meals, which is when saliva production is at its peak. Saliva not only washes away food debris and plaque, but it also neutralizes acids, lowering your risk of tooth decay.

Drink Plenty of Water: Staying hydrated is good not only for your overall health but also for your oral health. Water helps wash away food debris and reduces the acidity in your mouth, minimizing the effects of sweet Halloween treats on your smile. Encourage your children and family members to drink water throughout the day, especially if they’re eating more candy than usual.

Schedule a Post-Halloween Dental Visit: One of the most important things you can do for your smile is to visit First Class Family Dentistry for your regular dental exams and cleanings. Dr. Barbu and his dedicated team will ensure your smile stays healthy and strong this holiday season and all year long.

If you’re looking for solutions to restore damaged teeth or replace missing ones, you’ve come to the right place. At First Class Family Dentistry, we proudly offer a comprehensive range of restorative dentistry options, including dental crowns and bridges, using the latest technology and highest-quality materials. Dr. Barbu will recommend the most conservative solution to restore the health, function, and natural appearance of your smile.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is an aesthetic, tooth-shaped cap that fully encases a tooth’s visible surfaces, enhancing its strength, shape, function, and appearance. At First Class Family Dentistry, we offer all-porcelain crowns that we closely match to the color, shape, and texture of your natural teeth, delivering beautifully natural smiles. With proper care, a dental crown can enhance your smile for many years to come.

Why Would You Need a Dental Crown?

Dr. Barbu may recommend a dental crown for the following:

  • To restore a weak or damaged tooth
  • To repair tooth damage due to deep decay or a large cavity
  • To protect a tooth after a root canal treatment
  • To repair a tooth worn due to grinding and clenching (bruxism)
  • To hold together the pieces of a tooth that’s chipped, cracked, or broken
  • To replace one or more missing teeth by supporting a dental bridge or covering an implant
  • To mask tooth flaws and imperfections, improving the appearance, color, shape, length, or size of one or more teeth

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed tooth replacement option designed to complete your smile if you’re missing one or several neighboring teeth. Your restoration typically consists of one or more replacement teeth secured to dental crowns placed on natural teeth adjacent to the gap. We also offer removable bridges that attach to natural teeth on either side of the gap with metal clasps or precision attachments. Your replacement teeth are made to closely match your natural teeth, delivering a seamless smile.

How Can a Dental Bridge Enhance Your Smile?

Here is a look at some of the benefits dental bridges offer:

  • They restore your ability to chew and enjoy more of your favorite foods
  • They help you speak more clearly and confidently
  • They support your facial structure and enhance the appearance of your smile
  • They prevent the remaining teeth from shifting, preserving the alignment of your teeth and bite
  • They balance the forces of your bite, reducing the risk of periodontal disease, tooth wear, and TMJ disorder
  • They are incredibly durable, lasting many years with proper care and maintenance

Dental Crown vs. Bridge: Which One Is Right for You?

Deciding between a dental crown or bridge will depend on various factors, including the extent of damage or tooth loss. If you have a tooth with damage, deep decay, or wear, we may recommend a dental crown. If, however, you have one or several adjacent failing or missing teeth, a dental bridge may be a better option to restore your complete smile.

It’s also important to consider the health of the adjacent teeth that would provide support to a dental bridge. If they are healthy and strong, a dental bridge can be an effective solution to restore your smile. If, however, they are weak or compromised, restoring the affected tooth with a dental crown placed on an implant may be a better option. Dr. Barbu will recommend the restoration best suited for your specific needs.

Dental Crowns and Bridges Near Me in Sandusky, MI

Looking for long-lasting solutions to restore damaged or missing teeth? Our team at First Class Family Dentistry is here to help. Dr. Barbu will help you determine whether a dental crown or bridge is the ideal solution for your unique needs. Are you dreaming of a straight, uniform smile? The good news is that it’s never too late! Clear aligners at First Class Family Dentistry can help teens and adults achieve the smile of their dreams without the hassle of traditional metal braces. Visit us today to start your journey toward a beautiful, confident smile.

What Are Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are a discreet alternative to metal braces. They are custom-crafted from a smooth, clear thermoplastic material that fits snugly over your teeth. Clear aligners work like braces, placing pressure on your teeth to gradually move them toward the desired position. Because they are nearly invisible, most people won’t even know you’re wearing them.

How Do Clear Aligners Work?

Your clear aligner process begins with a consultation with Dr. Barbu, who will evaluate your unique needs and help you determine whether clear aligner therapy is right for you. The next step is taking digital scans of your teeth, which we use to create your custom treatment plan.

You will receive a series of custom aligners, each slightly different from the last. Your aligner trays will gently and precisely shift your teeth toward the desired position. You will need to wear your aligners for about 20-22 hours a day, only taking them out to eat and clean your teeth. Every week or two, you’ll swap your aligners for the next in the series, following your treatment plan. Periodic check-ups will ensure your treatment stays on track.

Once you achieve the desired results, it’s important to wear custom retainers to prevent your teeth from moving back out of alignment.

What Are the Benefits of Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners have many benefits, including the following:

  • Discreet: Clear aligners are nearly invisible, making them an excellent option for those who want to straighten their smiles without drawing attention to metal braces.
  • Comfortable: Your clear aligner trays are made of smooth plastic, which makes them more comfortable than metal braces with their metal brackets and wires.
  • Convenient: You can remove your aligners, allowing you to enjoy your favorite foods without restriction and brush and floss with ease.
  • Versatile: Clear aligners can treat a variety of orthodontic concerns, including crowded, gapped, or misaligned teeth and problems with the bite.
  • Better Oral Health: It’s much easier to clean straighter teeth, lowering the risk of periodontal disease and tooth decay.
  • Improved Balance: Aligning your bite can reduce wear and tear on your teeth and reduce the risk of jaw joint disorders.
  • Effective: Clear aligners therapy produces impressive results, delivering a smile that will make you want to smile.

Clear Aligner Therapy Near Me in Sandusky, MI

So, can you straighten your teeth at any age? Absolutely! Clear aligners offer a flexible, discreet, and effective solution for achieving the smile you’ve always wanted, regardless of age. A consultation with Dr. Barbu of First Class Family Dentistry will get you on track to the smile of your dreams. We invite you to call 810-688-6677 to schedule your appointment or book one online today.

Looking for solutions to mask tooth flaws or imperfections? At First Class Family Dentistry, we offer cosmetic dentistry solutions, including dental bonding, to improve the shape, size, color, or overall appearance of your teeth, instantly transforming your smile. The pain-free, conservative procedure produces flawless results in just one office visit!

What Is Cosmetic Bonding?

Cosmetic bonding involves applying a tooth-colored composite material to the tooth surfaces to mask tooth flaws and minor imperfections, enhancing the appearance of your smile. The pain-free treatment requires no local anesthetics, drill, downtime, or recovery time! The quick and conservative procedure delivers instant, stunning transformations.

How Can Cosmetic Bonding Enhance Your Smile?

Cosmetic bonding can enhance your smile in many ways, including the following:

  • Improving the appearance of severely stained and discolored teeth that do not respond to conventional whitening treatments
  • Repairing chipped, decayed, broken, or damaged teeth, restoring their function and natural appearance
  • Improving the shape and overall appearance of misshapen or uneven teeth, improving the symmetry of your smile
  • Covering exposed tooth roots due to gum recession, protecting them, relieving tooth sensitivity, and enhancing the appearance of your smile
  • Correcting minor tooth misalignment and closing small gaps between teeth, delivering a straighter, more harmonious smile
  • Restoring the natural size and function of teeth worn due to habitual grinding and clenching, a condition known as bruxism
  • Improving the color, size, shape, alignment, and overall appearance of teeth with minor flaws or imperfections, instantly transforming your smile

What Are the Advantages of Cosmetic Bonding?

Cosmetic bonding is a quick and cost-effective cosmetic dentistry option to transform your smile with beautifully natural outcomes. It does not require the removal of any tooth structure, making it one of the most conservative options to mask tooth flaws and imperfections. The results of cosmetic bonding are immediate, and with proper care and maintenance, you’ll enjoy a virtually flawless smile for up to 10 years or even longer!

What Is the Cosmetic Bonding Procedure?

The cosmetic bonding procedure takes about 30 to 60 minutes per tooth. After carefully selecting a composite resin material shade that closely matches the color of your teeth, Dr. Barbu will use a conditioning liquid to roughen your tooth surfaces to help the material bond. Next, he will place a small amount of the putty-like resin and sculpt and mold it to resemble your natural teeth.

Dr. Barbu will use a curing light to harden the composite resin material and help it bond to your tooth surfaces, then make any adjustments needed to ensure a comfortable bite. The last step is polishing your new restoration to match the natural sheen of your teeth.

Looking for solutions to restore failing or missing teeth? At First Class Family Dentistry, we offer a range of tooth replacement solutions, including complete dentures, using the latest technology and techniques. Our restorations are meticulously crafted to match your smile, delivering seamless results. Here’s a closer look at how complete dentures can complement your smile.

What Are Complete Dentures?

Dentures are oral prosthetics designed to replace an entire arch of missing or failing teeth in your upper or lower jaw. They consist of gum-colored resin bases with replacement teeth attached. At First Class Family Dentistry, we take impressions of your mouth which skilled lab technicians use to craft high-quality dentures that blend seamlessly with your smile.

What Are the Benefits of Complete Dentures?

Denture technology has advanced in leaps and bounds over the recent years, providing restorations that are sleeker, more comfortable, and more functional than ever before. Here is a look at some of the benefits complete dentures offer:

  • Aesthetic Restorations: One of the immediate benefits of complete dentures is restoring your beautifully natural smile. Your replacement teeth are created from the highest-quality materials, enhancing your oral health and your smile.
  • Improved Appearance: Complete dentures help prevent the facial sagging that occurs with tooth loss. Your new restoration will support your facial structure and maintain your youthful contours.
  • Restored Oral Function: Complete dentures enhance your chewing function, allowing you to enjoy more of your favorite foods. They also improve speech, helping to clear up any lisping or whistling sound caused by gaps in your smile.
  • Quick and Affordable: Compared to other tooth replacement options like dental implants, complete dentures offer a cost-effective solution for full-mouth restoration. Moreover, they require no surgery for placement, making them a quicker and less invasive option for restoring your smile.
  • Customizable and Convenient: Your complete dentures are customized to fit the unique contours of your mouth for enhanced comfort and function. Your new removable restorations are incredibly convenient and easy to care for and clean.
  • Long-Lasting: Your complete dentures are made from a high-quality, durable material. With proper care and maintenance, they can last 7-10 years, or even longer, providing a long-term solution to restore your smile.

Complete dentures may require some time to get used to and may need adjustments and relining down the road to maintain a perfect fit. It’s important to keep up with regular dental visits to ensure your new restorations remain comfortable and functional as your mouth experiences changes over time.

At First Class Family Dentistry, we are proponents of prevention to keep dental disease at bay. We are pleased to offer a range of preventive services, including routine and deep dental cleanings, to reduce the risk of tooth decay and gum disease and promote healthier, brighter smiles. The question is, what type of dental cleaning is right for you?

How Often Should You Schedule Dental Cleanings?

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends dental exams and cleanings at intervals determined by your dentist. In general, most of our patients with healthy teeth and gums require twice-yearly dental cleanings. However, those with gum disease or risk factors for dental problems may require more frequent care.

Understanding Periodontal Disease

Periodontal, or gum disease, is a serious chronic oral health concern that affects your gums, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone supporting your teeth. It usually results from plaque buildup on your gum line, which causes irritation and gum inflammation. Periodontal disease stands as the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. It has also been linked to a host of health concerns, including heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and more.

What Are Routine Dental Cleanings?

Routine dental cleanings are those you have every six months to keep your smile healthy and sound. Our hygienist will gently remove any plaque or tartar buildup on your teeth, along your gum line, and between your teeth line using a dental scaler. Next, we will floss between your teeth to remove any remaining plaque or debris and polish your teeth, leaving them clean and bright. We may also recommend a topical fluoride application to help prevent cavities.

Routine dental cleanings have been shown to significantly reduce your risk of tooth decay, cavities, periodontal disease, bad breath, and a host of health concerns. During your visit, we will evaluate every aspect of your oral health and check for signs of early decay or gum inflammation, allowing for prompt treatment.

What Are Deep Cleanings?

Routine dental cleanings help maintain healthy teeth and gums. If, however, we see signs of gum disease, we may recommend a deep dental cleaning known as scaling and root planing. Similar to your regular cleaning, we will start by scaling, which involves removing plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth and along the gum line. Next is root planing, which involves gently cleaning and smoothing out the tooth root surfaces to help promote healing.

Scaling and root planing has been shown to reverse gum disease in its earliest stage known as gingivitis. If, however, the condition has progressed to periodontitis, deep dental cleanings can help manage it and prevent its progression and further damage to your gums and structures supporting your teeth.

Following your deep dental cleaning, we typically recommend periodontal maintenance visits every 3 to 4 months. These include professional cleanings, thorough gum health evaluations, and any necessary interventions to maintain your gum health.

Routine and Deep Dental Cleanings Near Me in Sandusky, MI

At First Class Family Dentistry, we are dedicated to maintaining your oral health. Dr. Barbu and his dedicated team will recommend the ideal type of dental cleaning to address your unique needs and safeguard your smile. We invite you to call 810-688-6677 to schedule your appointment or book one online today.

Introducing Lumibrite Whitening

As the years go by, teeth can change their color due to factors like diet, the natural aging process, smoking, some illnesses, and the use of certain medications. First Class Family Dentistry is pleased to offer the Lumibrite teeth whitening system to enhance the appearance of your smile. Whether you want a quick in-office whitening treatment or prefer to brighten your smile at home, Lumibrite has the perfect solution for you.

Lumibrite In-Office Whitening: Quick and Effective

Lumibrite Chairside Whitening is a new in-office treatment that delivers dramatic whitening results in as little as 30 minutes. The professional whitening system comes in different concentrations for a fully customizable experience. Lumibrite combines a desensitizer with a patented whitening gel for fast, effective, and gentle whitening with zero sensitivity. It also contains fluoride for an even healthier smile.

During treatment, we will protect your lips and gums, then apply the Lumibrite Desensitizing Enhance and allow it to set. Next, we will apply the whitening gel to the surfaces of your teeth and may use a special light to accelerate your whitening procedure. After 30 minutes, we will remove the gel and rinse the area. We may repeat the process to achieve your desired shade. Lumibrite Professional Whitening has been shown to brighten your smile up to 7 shades in just 30 minutes!

Lumibrite At-Home Whitening: Customized and Comfortable

We are pleased to offer a Lumibrite take-home whitening kit if you prefer to whiten your teeth at home or for touch-up treatments to maintain your dazzling smile. Your kit consists of whitening trays custom-made from impressions of your mouth and Lumibrite professional-grade whitening gel.

Your daily treatment time will depend on the concentration of your gel and the extent of tooth discoloration. You’ll need to apply a small amount of gel in your whitening trays, as per our directions, and then place them in your mouth for the recommended amount of time. It may take up to two weeks to achieve your desired results.

Why Choose Lumibrite Teeth Whitening?

The Lumibrite teeth whitening system is known for its effectiveness while minimizing sensitivity, offering a gentle option to restore your white smile. Whether you opt for an in-office treatment for immediate results or choose the at-home method for a gradual transformation, Lumibrite delivers noticeable improvements in the color of your teeth while protecting them from tooth decay. The professional whitening treatment is safe when administered by a dental professional, delivering brighter teeth while safeguarding your smile.

Are You a Candidate for Lumibrite Whitening?

Lumibrite Whitening is suitable for most adults wanting to improve the appearance of their smile. Ideal candidates are those with healthy teeth and gums who wish to correct discoloration caused by food, drink, aging, or smoking. Lumibrite may not be effective for all types of discoloration, such as stains caused by certain medications or dental trauma. If teeth whitening is not right for you, Dr. Barbu may recommend an alternative cosmetic dentistry option, such as dental veneers or crowns to whiten and brighten your smile.
