]]>As the years go by, many factors can lead to dull and discolored teeth, including the natural aging process, smoking, and consuming dark foods and beverages like coffee, tea, and berries. Trauma, certain illnesses, and some medications can also result in tooth discoloration. The good news is that professional teeth whitening can lift most stains, leaving your teeth bright and shiny in time for the holidays.
At First Class Family Dentistry, we offer in-office and at-home Lumibrite whitening treatments to transform your smile. Lumibrite in-office or chairside whitening is a new teeth whitening option that delivers dramatic results in as little as 30 minutes. The innovative system comes in different concentrations, offering a fully customizable experience. A desensitizer and a patented whitening gel provide a fast, effective, and gentle whitening experience with zero sensitivity, while fluoride helps promote a healthier smile. Lumibrite Professional Whitening can brighten your smile up to 7 shades in just 30 minutes!
If you’d rather whiten your teeth in the comfort of your home, we are happy to provide you with custom whitening trays and the Lumibrite professional-grade whitening gel. You can also use your kit for touch-up treatments to keep your smile at its best.
Lumibrite teeth whitening is ideal for most teeth stains, especially yellowish teeth resulting from smoking or consuming dark-colored foods and drinks. When it comes to discoloration resulting from trauma or the use of medications, professional whitening may not yield the desired results. If teeth whitening is not right for you, Dr. Barbu may recommend a different cosmetic dentistry solution, such as dental veneers or crowns, to transform your smile.
After achieving your bright holiday smile, the following are tips to keep it healthy and prevent it from becoming dull and discolored once again:

]]>The post 5 Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings appeared first on First Class Family Dentistry | Sandusky, MI.
]]>Tooth-colored fillings are restorations made from a composite resin material that we closely match to the shade of your natural teeth. Your new filling will bond directly to your tooth structure, restoring the health and function of the affected tooth.
Tooth-colored fillings are versatile, offering a quick and conservative solution to close small gaps between teeth and repair chipped, worn, or cracked teeth, restoring their health and function.
The following are the top five benefits of tooth-colored fillings:
#1 They Look Natural: Your tooth-colored fillings are custom-made to match your teeth, delivering beautifully natural results. Once in place, no one will know you’ve had any dental work done.
#2 They Are Conservative: Tooth-colored fillings require minimal preparation, preserving much more of your natural tooth structure than traditional fillings. Keeping more of the tooth structure intact helps enhance the strength and integrity of the treated tooth, maintaining your long-term dental health.
#3 They Bond to the Tooth Structure: Unlike traditional fillings that are wedged in place, your tooth-colored filling will bond to your tooth structure. That helps strengthen and fortify the restored tooth, ensuring its longevity and making it less likely to break or fracture.
#4 They Don’t Expand and Contract: Silver fillings contract and expand in response to heat and cold, which can often leave the tooth structure weaker and prone to cracking. Tooth-colored fillings, on the other hand, do not respond to temperature changes, making them less likely to cause tooth cracks or fractures.
#5 They Are Durable: Tooth-colored fillings are strong and durable, lasting up to 10 years or even longer with proper care. We recommend maintaining proper oral hygiene, including daily brushing and flossing. Avoid biting down on hard foods or objects or biting your nails so you don’t accidentally damage your tooth-colored filling. It’s also important to visit First Class Family Dentistry for your twice-yearly dental exams and cleanings to ensure your restorations and natural teeth stay in tip-top shape.
If you have a damaged or painful tooth, contact First Class Family Dentistry to schedule a consultation. Dr. Barbu may recommend a tooth-colored dental filling to get your smile’s health, natural appearance, and function back on track. You can count on us for exceptional care and service. We invite you to call 810-688-6677 to schedule your appointment or book one online today.

]]>Maintaining good oral hygiene care is more important than ever during the holidays, especially when indulging in sweet candies and treats. Make sure you brush your teeth at least twice daily for two minutes and floss daily. Encourage every member of your family to maintain good oral hygiene this Halloween and all year long.
Choose Candy Wisely: While it’s difficult to resist Halloween candies, some are better for your teeth than others. For example, it’s best to avoid sticky, chewy, or gummy candies, which cling to the grooves and crevices of the teeth, providing an abundant food source for harmful oral bacteria. We also recommend steering clear of hard candies, which can chip or fracture your teeth. A healthier candy choice would be dark chocolate, which contains less sugar and doesn’t stick to the teeth. It also has antioxidants, providing benefits to your overall health.
Timing Your Treats: Munching on candies and sweet Halloween treats all day long prolongs the contact of your teeth with sugar, so cavities tend to form faster. We recommend keeping candies for during or after meals, which is when saliva production is at its peak. Saliva not only washes away food debris and plaque, but it also neutralizes acids, lowering your risk of tooth decay.
Drink Plenty of Water: Staying hydrated is good not only for your overall health but also for your oral health. Water helps wash away food debris and reduces the acidity in your mouth, minimizing the effects of sweet Halloween treats on your smile. Encourage your children and family members to drink water throughout the day, especially if they’re eating more candy than usual.
Schedule a Post-Halloween Dental Visit: One of the most important things you can do for your smile is to visit First Class Family Dentistry for your regular dental exams and cleanings. Dr. Barbu and his dedicated team will ensure your smile stays healthy and strong this holiday season and all year long.
Halloween is a time for spooky fun and frightfully delicious treats, but it doesn’t have to be a nightmare for your oral health. Dr. Barbu and our team at First Class Family Dentistry are proponents of prevention to keep dental disease at bay. So, if you haven’t had a dental exam and cleaning lately, make sure you reach out to us today. We invite you to call 810-688-6677 to schedule your appointment or book one online today.

]]>The post Dental Crown vs. Bridge: Making the Right Choice for Your Smile appeared first on First Class Family Dentistry | Sandusky, MI.
]]>A dental crown is an aesthetic, tooth-shaped cap that fully encases a tooth’s visible surfaces, enhancing its strength, shape, function, and appearance. At First Class Family Dentistry, we offer all-porcelain crowns that we closely match to the color, shape, and texture of your natural teeth, delivering beautifully natural smiles. With proper care, a dental crown can enhance your smile for many years to come.
Dr. Barbu may recommend a dental crown for the following:
A dental bridge is a fixed tooth replacement option designed to complete your smile if you’re missing one or several neighboring teeth. Your restoration typically consists of one or more replacement teeth secured to dental crowns placed on natural teeth adjacent to the gap. We also offer removable bridges that attach to natural teeth on either side of the gap with metal clasps or precision attachments. Your replacement teeth are made to closely match your natural teeth, delivering a seamless smile.
Here is a look at some of the benefits dental bridges offer:
Deciding between a dental crown or bridge will depend on various factors, including the extent of damage or tooth loss. If you have a tooth with damage, deep decay, or wear, we may recommend a dental crown. If, however, you have one or several adjacent failing or missing teeth, a dental bridge may be a better option to restore your complete smile.
It’s also important to consider the health of the adjacent teeth that would provide support to a dental bridge. If they are healthy and strong, a dental bridge can be an effective solution to restore your smile. If, however, they are weak or compromised, restoring the affected tooth with a dental crown placed on an implant may be a better option. Dr. Barbu will recommend the restoration best suited for your specific needs.
Looking for long-lasting solutions to restore damaged or missing teeth? Our team at First Class Family Dentistry is here to help. Dr. Barbu will help you determine whether a dental crown or bridge is the ideal solution for your unique needs. We invite you to call 810-688-6677 to schedule your appointment or book one online today.

]]>Clear aligners are a discreet alternative to metal braces. They are custom-crafted from a smooth, clear thermoplastic material that fits snugly over your teeth. Clear aligners work like braces, placing pressure on your teeth to gradually move them toward the desired position. Because they are nearly invisible, most people won’t even know you’re wearing them.
Your clear aligner process begins with a consultation with Dr. Barbu, who will evaluate your unique needs and help you determine whether clear aligner therapy is right for you. The next step is taking digital scans of your teeth, which we use to create your custom treatment plan.
You will receive a series of custom aligners, each slightly different from the last. Your aligner trays will gently and precisely shift your teeth toward the desired position. You will need to wear your aligners for about 20-22 hours a day, only taking them out to eat and clean your teeth. Every week or two, you’ll swap your aligners for the next in the series, following your treatment plan. Periodic check-ups will ensure your treatment stays on track.
Once you achieve the desired results, it’s important to wear custom retainers to prevent your teeth from moving back out of alignment.
Clear aligners have many benefits, including the following:
So, can you straighten your teeth at any age? Absolutely! Clear aligners offer a flexible, discreet, and effective solution for achieving the smile you’ve always wanted, regardless of age. A consultation with Dr. Barbu of First Class Family Dentistry will get you on track to the smile of your dreams. ]]>Cosmetic bonding involves applying a tooth-colored composite material to the tooth surfaces to mask tooth flaws and minor imperfections, enhancing the appearance of your smile. The pain-free treatment requires no local anesthetics, drill, downtime, or recovery time! The quick and conservative procedure delivers instant, stunning transformations.
Cosmetic bonding can enhance your smile in many ways, including the following:
Cosmetic bonding is a quick and cost-effective cosmetic dentistry option to transform your smile with beautifully natural outcomes. It does not require the removal of any tooth structure, making it one of the most conservative options to mask tooth flaws and imperfections. The results of cosmetic bonding are immediate, and with proper care and maintenance, you’ll enjoy a virtually flawless smile for up to 10 years or even longer!
The cosmetic bonding procedure takes about 30 to 60 minutes per tooth. After carefully selecting a composite resin material shade that closely matches the color of your teeth, Dr. Barbu will use a conditioning liquid to roughen your tooth surfaces to help the material bond. Next, he will place a small amount of the putty-like resin and sculpt and mold it to resemble your natural teeth.
Dr. Barbu will use a curing light to harden the composite resin material and help it bond to your tooth surfaces, then make any adjustments needed to ensure a comfortable bite. The last step is polishing your new restoration to match the natural sheen of your teeth.

]]>The post Routine and Deep Dental Cleanings – What’s the Difference? appeared first on First Class Family Dentistry | Sandusky, MI.
]]>The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends dental exams and cleanings at intervals determined by your dentist. In general, most of our patients with healthy teeth and gums require twice-yearly dental cleanings. However, those with gum disease or risk factors for dental problems may require more frequent care.
Periodontal, or gum disease, is a serious chronic oral health concern that affects your gums, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone supporting your teeth. It usually results from plaque buildup on your gum line, which causes irritation and gum inflammation. Periodontal disease stands as the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. It has also been linked to a host of health concerns, including heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and more.
Routine dental cleanings are those you have every six months to keep your smile healthy and sound. Our hygienist will gently remove any plaque or tartar buildup on your teeth, along your gum line, and between your teeth line using a dental scaler. Next, we will floss between your teeth to remove any remaining plaque or debris and polish your teeth, leaving them clean and bright. We may also recommend a topical fluoride application to help prevent cavities.
Routine dental cleanings have been shown to significantly reduce your risk of tooth decay, cavities, periodontal disease, bad breath, and a host of health concerns. During your visit, we will evaluate every aspect of your oral health and check for signs of early decay or gum inflammation, allowing for prompt treatment.
Routine dental cleanings help maintain healthy teeth and gums. If, however, we see signs of gum disease, we may recommend a deep dental cleaning known as scaling and root planing. Similar to your regular cleaning, we will start by scaling, which involves removing plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth and along the gum line. Next is root planing, which involves gently cleaning and smoothing out the tooth root surfaces to help promote healing.
Scaling and root planing has been shown to reverse gum disease in its earliest stage known as gingivitis. If, however, the condition has progressed to periodontitis, deep dental cleanings can help manage it and prevent its progression and further damage to your gums and structures supporting your teeth.
Following your deep dental cleaning, we typically recommend periodontal maintenance visits every 3 to 4 months. These include professional cleanings, thorough gum health evaluations, and any necessary interventions to maintain your gum health.
At First Class Family Dentistry, we are dedicated to maintaining your oral health. Dr. Barbu and his dedicated team will recommend the ideal type of dental cleaning to address your unique needs and safeguard your smile. We invite you to call 810-688-6677 to schedule your appointment or book one online today.
